Self-Help vs. Science

16 Feb

Louise Hay is a best-selling author who claims that she has cured herself of cancer through the power of positive thinking. Her self-help book You Can Heal Your Life has been on the New York Times Bestseller List and remained there for 12 consecutive weeks. Her popularity has allowed her to launch a self-help publishing company and even a support group called “Hayride” for individuals seeking affirmations (most of which attend to seek a cure for cancer and other diseases). Although I think positivity is a virtue, it makes me uneasy that Hay is suggesting or actually stating that positive thinking will help cure all ailments.

For those who don’t know much about Erin Wasson, the model featured on my post, she is an American model known for her bohemian/tribal street wear and I think she embodies what the colonists would have feared: women’s stereotypical association and fascination with Nature. Therefore, it is a possibility they would be assumed to be attracted to Native Americans because they exemplify freedom.

A Bit on Me

Hi everyone! I’m Charlotte Li. I’m a Communications major minoring in English Literature. I’m from Boston, the city, and ironically I sound more like a Valley girl than a Bostonian. This will be my final semester. After Pace, I plan on attending a culinary school for the pastry arts and just bake for a living. Maybe if I’m lucky, I’ll have my own cooking show on the Food Network or work behind the scenes of Cupcake Wars as a productions assistant. I can be realistic too. My absolute favorite show to watch is Criminal Minds, but it pains me to watch an episode that I’ve seen before. I adore interesting quotes and relevantly Criminal Minds always begins and ends with one. A quote that was featured on the show and has stuck with me is one by Clive Barker: “Superman is, after all, an alien life form. He is simply the acceptable face of invading realities.”
