Self-Help vs. Science

16 Feb

Louise Hay is a best-selling author who claims that she has cured herself of cancer through the power of positive thinking. Her self-help book You Can Heal Your Life has been on the New York Times Bestseller List and remained there for 12 consecutive weeks. Her popularity has allowed her to launch a self-help publishing company and even a support group called “Hayride” for individuals seeking affirmations (most of which attend to seek a cure for cancer and other diseases). Although I think positivity is a virtue, it makes me uneasy that Hay is suggesting or actually stating that positive thinking will help cure all ailments.

Interesting– perhaps this strain of “self-help” is more related to the religious strain of Puritanism/Calvinism than it is to the Franklin reason/enlightenment programs of self-improvement. A potentially interesting topic….but you’d need to think through it a bit more!
