For Women Under 30, Most Births Occur Outside Marriage

This article caught my eye in this morning’s New York Times- it’s a modern conversation about the questionable necessity of marriage in today’s society. It states that more than half of births to women under 30 occur outside of marriage. Currently, marriage is seen as more of a luxury than a requirement- something more accessible to the well-educated than to most. There is no longer such a strong stigma attached to the idea of children outside of marriage; it is now widely accepted. Is this because of the relatively new ease of divorce? Or is this a glimpse of women’s expanding indepedency? It’s an interesting article to relate to our conversation last class.
